Hot Women and Heroes of the Blues

While we all know and love Robert Crumb as the amazing comic artist with an extreme gritty style and sometimes vulgar taste - my interest lies in his obsession with collecting and illustrating some of the most amazing and unheard of music. It is via his fame and digging to build compilations that some of the most wonderful sound bites have been unearthed.
Some years ago I walked into a shop on East Carson Street in Pittsburgh PA-
Over the radio came the most primitive, honest melodies and vocal styles of wonderful women from decades past. I was of course blown away and shuffled myself to the counter to inquire about what it that had taken over my ears. After some time- I recovered Hot Women for my own and have been  throwing it into the rotation ever since and I want to share it with you.

Maria Vasileiathou- "Arostisa Manoula Mou" Greek late 1930s
Cleoma Falcon- "Blues Negres"-Louisiana Cajun 1934
Grupo De "Algeria" :"El Tambor DE LA ALGERIA" Cuban 1928

In addition to these Hot Women Mr. Crumb's interest in collecting and illustrating the greats from the past hardly ends there. Recently, I picked up these wonderful trading cards from a local book shop. The deck includes 36 blues greats spanning decades.  I choose some of my favorites to share with you but the list of course continues on...

Other artists include...
Lemon Jefferson
Son House
Peetie Wheatstraw
Blind Willie Johnson
Memphis Jug Band
Bo Carter
Other collections:
Early Jazz Greats and Pioneers of Country Music

From above ^
Skip James- Crow Jane

Memphis Minnie- Kissing in the Dark

Mississippi Sheiks- I am the Devil

How we love The Gories on 11/23/2010

Ahhhhh*...
The Gories. Stripped down, simple and just enough nasty__That is what makes makes this rock and roll three piece of Micky Collins, Dan Kroha and Peg O'Neil.
I was lucky enough to catch them all together on stage at the Beachland Ballroom in Cleveland, Ohio on 11-23-2010. With a line up that included The Alarm Clocks (60's Cleveland garage rock), Eddie Kirland(American Blues, passed Feb. 2011) and DJ Fine Wine of WFMU spinning between sets. Fine Wines progression in building the tension from Eddie Kirland to the Gories was more than on point with a variety of jazz, blues, psych, and garage.
And of course...Me making Mickey Collins smile.
